Cardiology

Since its inception in 1951, the Department of Cardiology has played a pioneering role in the development of Cardiology in India. Over the years, the department has consistently provided high-quality, comprehensive medical care to patients with cardiovascular diseases, and is today NABH accredited. The key to excellence in patient care has been a team of dedicated, competent professionals and a multi-disciplinary approach, with contributions from cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, rheumatology and radiology departments.

Patients typically travel vast distances and throng the department’s outpatient and inpatient service areas for high-quality, ethical medical care delivered at reasonable cost with a humane touch.

Education is another major thrust area. The department was one of the first two institutions to start the DM Cardiology course in India in 1965; many cardiologists have passed out of its portals, moving on to attain positions of eminence and creating a significant positive impact on health care across the country.

Clinical research has been another area of strength, with contributions in the areas of rheumatic and coronary artery disease, and more recently in acute cardiac care, vascular interventions and cardiac electrophysiology; much of this work has been published in peer-reviewed national and international journals.

Thus the department has upheld, over more than half a century, the vision of the institution to be a witness to the healing ministry of Christ, through excellence in education, service and research.

We look after:

  • Ischemic heart disease – where the blood supply to the heart is poor. Patients get angina, shortness of breath, swollen ankles etc.

  • Heart failure – when the heart does not work properly. People may get tired, short of breath, swollen ankles etc
  • Valvular heart disease – the valves in the heart have an opening that is too small or the valves leak.
  • Hypertension – high blood pressure (Increased BP).
  • Cardiac rhythm abnormalities – the heart beats too fast or too slow or irregularly.
  • Congenital heart problems – when someone is born with heart problems.
  • Vascular problems – the blood vessels in the body can become narrow or blocked. This often causes pain. Cardiology can open some of these blocks and so make the blood supply better.

What are the tests performed in Cardiology?

Non-invasive investigations (tests that do not need needles or operations) include:

  • An electrocardiogram (ECG) records the electrical patterns of the heart.
  • Echocardiography (Echo), an ultrasound scan of the heart.
  • Stress testing, TMT.
  • Holter test. This records the ECG while the person is walking around for one day i.e., 24hrs.
  • Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring – records the BP while the person is walking around for one day.
  • Head Up Tilt Test (HUTT) – to evaluate causes of fainting

Invasive Cardiology

There are cardiac catheterisation laboratories, often just called the cath labs where they do invasive tests and invasive procedures. Invasive tests involve putting needles, wires or tubes into the body.

  • Cardiac catheterization – the study of the heart by putting a tiny tube into the heart. Then the doctor injects a “dye” that shows the inside of the heart.

  • Coronary angiogram – injecting a “dye” to show the arteries of the heart.
  • Electrophysiological procedures – measuring and treating abnormal electrical activity in the heart.
    Invasive Procedures

  • Coronary angioplasty. This is a treatment where special contrast is put into the heart to show the arteries on an Xray. The doctor widens any narrow arteries. This enlarges narrow areas or removes blocks. The blood can then flow faster.
  • Peripheral vessel angioplasty – looking at the arteries far away from the heart (peripheral). Then opening up any narrowed or blocked arteries (angioplasty).
  • Balloon valvuloplasty – opening up narrow heart valves – mitral, aortic, pulmonary and tricuspid valves.
  • Alcohol septal ablation.
  • Defect closures – abnormal holes in the heart can be closed. This includes Atrial Septal Defect (ASD); Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) and a Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA).
  • Radiofrequency ablation – using a special radio machine to remove abnormal areas, which produce abnormal rhythm of the heart.

  • Pacemaker implantation – putting in an electrical machine to help the heart beat at the right speed. Temporary ones are just for a short time and are then taken out.
Permanent ones stay in the patient and the patient goes home with it.
  • Intra-aortic balloon pump – used to treat some heart problems.

Heart Valve and Structural Heart Disease Clinic

Procedures:

  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement
  • Percutaneous heart valve replacement (a non-surgical method for replacing damaged heart valves)
  • Left atrial appendage closure (a treatment strategy to reduce the risk of left atrial appendage blood clots from entering the bloodstream and causing a stroke)

Cardiac Electrophysiology

The Cardio EP Unit is dedicated to diagnosing and treating abnormal heart rhythms (Arrhythmias).

Doctorate of Medicine Cardiology (D.M. Cardiology)

Christian Medical College is among the pioneers in launching super-specialty training in cardiovascular medicine in India since 1965, with nearly five noteworthy decades of proficiency in postgraduate tutelage. More than 109 doctorates of medicine graduates have passed out from our institute.

The Doctorate of Medicine (D.M.) Cardiology curriculum is the premier educational element of the department, imparting trainees with an in-depth understanding of the expansive discipline of Cardiology. Postgraduates are exposed to a host of diverse sub-specialties including pediatric cardiology, interventional cardiology, cardiovascular imaging and electrophysiology, all the while underscoring fundamental principles of history-taking and physical assessment.

Priority is awarded to research in clinical, basic or transitional areas, which is to be completed during the postgraduate training program. The success of our curriculum is ascribed to the twin pillars of the sizeable patient population our department caters to and the presence of experienced and devoted teachers. We take immense pride in our ability to provide excellent training and upholding the loftiest standards of clinical care.

Eligibility: MD in General Medicine/ Pediatrics

Course duration: 3 years

Affiliation: Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University

Number of seats: 6 per year

Applications are issued in December/ January every year and selection to the D.M. course are based on a written test followed by an interview. The postgraduate training program Course commences on 1stAugust. (Please refer http://home.cmcvellore.ac.in for further information)

B.Sc Cardiac Technology

The B.Sc. Cardiac Technology course commenced in 2013 with the objective of training Life Science graduates in the technical aspects of cardiovascular medicine. This program imparts skills necessary to conduct an assortment of diagnostic procedures including ECG, treadmill stress testing, echocardiography image acquisition and interpretation skills, holter monitoring and basic interpretation and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.

The course also provides in depth exposure and hands-on training in the cardiac catheterization laboratory with respect to handling of the image intensifier, technical aspects of fractional flow reserve, intravascular ultrasound and basic electrophysiology. In view of the host of procedural skills acquired during this training, graduates are well-equipped to pursue rewarding career opportunities in India and abroad.

PG Diploma in Cardiac technology

This course was instituted in 2001, and provided many graduates who are serving in many cardiac institutes in the country and abroad. This course trains personnel who are capable to record 12 lead ECG, connect monitoring leads for observation, assist in performing Treadmill and connecting Holter monitors.

They are also trained in the basics of cardiac catheterization for technical assistance. In view of the large number of procedures and the complex interventional procedures performed, the students trained in our institute get excellent experience in handling gadgets including IVUS, FFR, Rotablator consoles, IABP etc. Hence students from CMC, Vellore are much sought after in many institutes in the country and abroad.
