Clinical Pharmacology runs Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) services which translates into patient care and research. Here, patients who are on specific drugs where the blood concentration needs to be monitored, come to the Unit for appointment prior to the test. Patients follow the instructions and blood samples are collected and analysed. The results are conveyed with interpretations to the clinicians. TDM focuses on renal transplant patients, autoimmune disease, neurological disorders, tuberculosis, anticancer therapy, anti psychiatric medicines, antibiotics. A special test (TPMT) has been developed to help clinicians understand what dose of certain medicines they should start. The Unit collaborates with Pharmacy Services to do patient safety, drug interactions, and medicine use audits. More recently, testing for inborn errors of metabolism in babies and in older children is being undertaken.
