Dietary

The Department of Dietetics at Christian Medical College Vellore was established in the year 1950. The qualified dietitians of the department takes care of the nutritional needs of both outpatients as well as inpatients.

The Department is led by senior dietitian and In-charge, Ms. Manimegalai, who supervises a team of 10 qualified dietitians, including three registered dietitians.

Functions of the department
• Therapeutic Diet Planning and Execution
• Food Preparation and service matching the needs of the patient
• Providing nutritional care for in-patients
• Providing diet consultation for both in-patients and outpatients
• Offers a course in P.G. Diploma in dietetics
• Holding lectures on nutrition and dietetics for nursing students
• Undertaking research projects in collaboration with other units
• Offers dietetic internship for student of various colleges / universities for 4/6 wks and 6 mths for PGs.
• Conducting Nutrition Education and Nutrition Awareness programs for the public
• Conducting CNE (Workshops/Symposiums) on Nutrition

Personalised diet counselling is given at the Diet Clinic based on the nutritional requirement and disease condition of the patient. Personalised diet sheets are also given to patients after diet counselling.

Hospital food is optional at Christian Medical College, Vellore. The goal is to provide nutritious, safe and hygienic food to the patients on hospital diet at a very nominal price. Hospital food services is managed by a professional hospital catering group and rigorously monitored by the Hospital Dietetics Team for quality, quantity and safety.

PG Diploma in Dietetics

Six-months internship training programme
It is one of the recognized centers to offer 6 months external internship programme for the candidates appearing for Registered Dietitian (RD) Board examination conducted by Indian Dietetic Association.
Other training programmes
It also offers 4-8 weeks internship for postgraduate students of Nutrition as part of their curriculum.
Library
The Department boasts of an excellent library with a large number of books and journals both current and old issues.
