Distance Education

CMC Vellore’s Distance Education Department was set up in September 2004 under Dr Vinod Shah whose watchword was “Refer Less, Resolve More”.
The Distance Education Unit envisions an exponential increase in trained human resource for quality healthcare delivery, with a special focus on reaching the poor and marginalised in India and similar developing countries. The department strives to achieve this by training all categories of health workers (doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, medical / nursing students and community volunteer workers) through targeted curricula which provide standardized theoretical and practical training conducted at more than 20 centres throughout the country.
407 doctors, 11 dentists, 240 community lay leaders and 15 facilitators trained in 2018 – 19

The Blended Learning Programs we offer at present:
At present, the department runs the following programs:
Blended Learning Courses in Family Medicine:
The Post Graduate Diploma in Family Medicine (PGDFM) is a 2 year blended learning course with the motto “Refer less, Resolve more”, for equipping general practitioners, primary care clinicians, and other interested doctors in the country.
The Post Graduate Diploma in Family Medicine (PGDFM) for Government sponsored doctors is also being run for NHM sponsored doctors. The curriculum is the same as in the PGDFM course.
The International Post Graduate Diploma in Family Medicine (I-PGDFM) is a 2-year blended learning program to train and certify doctors with postgraduate training in family medicine in the developing world and equip them professionally and spiritually to serve their country and especially poor people. The I-PGDFM is an accredited distance education initiative by ICMDA, the Distance Education Unit of Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, India, and Loma Linda University (LLU), USA.
Distance Fellowship in Diabetes Management (DFID): With people with diabetes reaching epidemic proportions in India and with the sad mismanagement of people with diabetes across the country, we were prompted to launch this 1-year blended learning course for physicians and family physicians, run in partnership with the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at CMC, Vellore.
Community Lay-leaders Health Training Certificate (CLHTC) Program: This is a 1-year blended learning course aimed at equipping the 10,000 NGO workers based in very remote areas of the country to give basic primary healthcare.
Post Graduate Diploma in Geriatrics (PGDG): This is a 1-year blended learning course aimed to create a cadre of medical professionals to cater to the medical needs of older persons. It is run in partnership with the Department of Geriatrics from the Christian Medical College, Vellore.
Certificate course in General Dentistry (CGD): This is a 1-year blended learning certificate course in General Dentistry. It is designed to address the needs of dental graduates who wish to pursue a career in wholistic Clinical Dental Practice. The purpose of the training is to develop the competence and confidence of general dentists so that they can work effectively and ethically in a general or community practice setting.
Foundations in Dentistry (FID): This course provides dentists with an opportunity to gain insights into the fundamental principles of dental practice. Dentists are guided into the knowledge, attitudes and decision making skills essential for effective practice. This is an online course of 6 weeks duration.
Post Graduate Diploma in Mental Health (PGDMH): This is a 1-year blended learning course that can help to increase the pool of trained manpower in the country so as to deliver cost-effective, expert care to patients struggling with mental health issues. It uses many teaching-learning techniques to make adult learning both stimulating and interesting. The contact classes include interactive lectures (onsite and online), clinics, skills development, group activities and assessments. The content of the whole course is offered online.
Post Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Medicine (PGDRM):  The purpose of this 1-year blended learning course is to impart knowledge and provide skills up-gradation for general practitioners in rehabilitation medicine at the primary care level, with a strong emphasis on ethics, values, social responsibility, and teamwork. This is not equivalent to any postgraduate residential courses. The course provides a mix of interactive online self-learning modules, discussion forums, face-to-face online teaching and learning sessions, onsite skill training, field visits, one-on-one mentoring sessions, and project work.
Post Graduate Diploma in Life-style Medicine (PGDLM):  There is a need to produce specialists whose practices focus on Lifestyle Medicine. At the same time, physicians and surgeons from all specialties also need to gain the knowledge and skills of integrating lifestyle medicine into their current practices and specialties. Meeting these needs are the aim of this 1-year blended learning course. With the PGDLM more doctors and their associates will be equipped to provide clinical service, teaching and receive an introduction to research in lifestyle medicine.
proposed Postgraduate

There is an online Basic course as well as an Advanced blended learning course (critical care included) for doctors, nurses and allied health professionals) and a “Covid Suraksha” course for community volunteers.
