Outpatient services
Outpatients are seen on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8 am to 5 pm on the ground floor of the Administrative building (600B). We do comprehensive geriatric assessments and refer the patients when required for inputs from other departments including the superspecialties, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dietary etc. Approximately four hundred outpatients per outpatient clinic were seen and given a rational prescription, prior to the COVID pandemic.
The Memory Clinic runs on every Saturday mornings. This is a referral clinic, mainly drawing patients from Medicine and Neurology, where assessment and management protocols, which are individualized are set in motion. It is a multidisciplinary consultant led clinic.
A Falls and Balance Clinic is a multidisciplinary clinic, which is consultant led, and is a referral clinic runs on every Wednesday afternoons, where the majority of the patients come from the Orthopedic department. These older patients are usually post-operative patients – following a fracture neck or femur/intertrochanteric fractures. Their bone health is looked into.
Inpatient services
We manage over 1200 inpatients per year.
Consultations
We see around 50 inpatient consultations per month. These consultations deal with patients with numerous comorbidities on numerous drugs and patients with cognitive and mobility issues.
Clinical and laboratory services
There are a whole load of ancillary services which back us up in the form of world class laboratories and radiology services. Each of the super specialty departments also have their state of the art equipment and input into our service regularly.
Ongoing clinics
1.Orthopedic peri-op assessment – We liaise with the Department of Orthopedics and assess their patients over the age of 60 years posted for neck of femur and intertrochanteric surgeries, so that the perioperative period is smooth and they have an appropriate rehabilitation schedule. This liaison has been going on from 2018. This liaison is consultant led.
2.Vascular surgery – We also liaise with the Department of Vascular Surgery to rationalize medications and address issues of cognition, mobility and metabolic disorders, which are rampant in their population of patients. This was started in 2019.
3.RUHSA – is a peripheral hospital attached to CMC Vellore. There is a weekly consultant led clinic there, with a monthly visit to the Day Care Centres attached to this health care facility. All the people who attend the Day Care Centre have had a Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment done on them. This was started in 2019.
4.CMC Chittoor Outpatient facility – There are twice weekly Consultant led Clinics held in Chittoor. This is a town which is in the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh, about 35 kms away from Vellore. This is presently only functioning as an outpatient facility. This was started in 2019.
5.Falls and Balance clinic – This is a weekly referral clinic and is consultant led. The patients are assessed by a Geriatric consultant, nurse, medical sociologist and physiotherapist and the inflow of patients are from other medical OPDs, Ortho OPDs and patients seen on the Orthopedic wards following hip fractures. This was started in 2018.
6.Memory and Cognition Clinic – This is a consultant led weekly referral clinic where elderly patients from Medical/Specialty OPDs are assessed for cognitive ailments and appropriate treatment is given. This was started in 2018.
