The Department of Orthopaedics specializes in surgical treatment of various orthopaedic problems. There are three independent units within the department at present. These are three general Orthopaedic Units and three speciality units namely Spinal Disorders and Paediatric Orthopaedic and Hand Surgery , that function as a separate department in close conjunction with Orthopaedics. The department is well staffed with 14 professors and 36 consultants and post-graduates. We perform about 6000 surgical procedures per year and about 2000 more in daycare. Many consultants have had specialised surgical training abroad, in different fields of orthopaedics.
There are outpatient clinics from Monday to Saturday. Patients who need emergency care are attended to 24 x 7 in the Emergency services.
Dedicated patient care, clinical teaching and research are the core areas of priority.
Recently a new campus was inaugurated in Ranipet , and started functioning as a Level I trauma centre with specialised care to trauma.
Sports medicine including Arthroscopic Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Arthroscopic Bankart’s repair. Arthroscopy of ankle and elbow.
Paediatric orthopaedics including treatment of complex congenital, developmental anomalies and deformities like hip dysplasias (DDH), CTEV, congenital pseudoarthroses. Perthe’s disease, paediatric bone and soft tissue tumours, limb deficiency, skeletal dysplasia and cerebral palsy are few other conditions managed here in addition to various traumatic conditions in children.
Treatment of all bone tumours including custom made prosthesis
Treatment of all routine, complex trauma and neglected trauma.
Pulsed electromagnetic therapy.
Newer treatments soon to be introduced include, treatment of cartilage injuries (i.e Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation) and Minimally Invasive Surgery.

Training
There are twelve M.S. Ortho seats currently . There is a Post Doctoral 2 years Fellowship program in Spinal disorder surgery and a 3 year M.C.H program in the department of Paediatric Orthopaedics and Hand Surgery. In addition there are visitors from various centres of excellence abroad regularly. More than 100 articles have been published in peer reviewed journals from the department so far.
