The pathology department has a 12-member faculty, assisted by 21 technicians, 6 clerical staff, and 12 service staff. This department provides the diagnostic services of Surgical Pathology, Cytology (including FNAC), and Autopsy pathology to the CMC Hospital, its ancillary departments, and to other private, and Government clinics and hospitals in the country. In addition, the Department is involved in teaching Pathology to students in varied medical and paramedical disciplines, as well as carrying out research studies in different areas of medicine.

Diagnostic services provide reports on over 20,000 pathology specimens, 250 autopsies, and 10,000 cytology specimens (including FNACs) annually. The Department has facilities for intra-operative consultation with a frozen section and Stereotactic biopsy service, histochemistry, immunocytochemistry, immunoflourescence, DNA flowcytometry, and also plans to soon develop facilities for molecular cytogenetics. The consultant staff include those with special interrest, experience, and expertise in Gastrointestinal pathology, Haematopathology, Hepatic pathology, Dermatopathology, Ophthalmic pathology, Nephropathology, and Neuropathology.

The Department provides inservice training to postgraduate resident trainees in pathology (intake of two trainees per year for a three-year course) providing a rich experience of a wide variety of disorders seen in the tropics. Postgraduate trainees of other specialities (Neurology, Neurosurgery, Radiotherapy, Dermatology, Hematology, Clinical Pathology, and Microbiology) also spend varying periods of time in pathology.
