Pharmacology

The Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology comprises the Basic Pharmacology Unit located on the College Campus, Bagayam, and the Clinical Pharmacology Unit on the Hospital Campus, Vellore and Ranipet.
The Department was established in 1942 in the College Campus, Bagayam. It moved to its present site, the Fleming Research Institute, in 1962. The Institute was named after Sir Alexander Fleming who had visited the department in February 1953, and it was opened by the former Union Health Minister, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur. The Clinical Pharmacology Unit was started in 1976. The Department contributes to education, patient care and research.

  •     Pharmacovigilance: Monitoring for patient safety with visits to the wards and ICUs, causality analysis and collating reports for analysis.
  •     Medicine use audits: This is being done in collaboration with the Pharmacy services.
  •     Drug Interactions: Audits are done within the hospital where prescriptions are audited for drug interactions.
  •     Serious Adverse Event Monitoring: All serious adverse events related to clinical trials (both, international Pharmaceutical trials and      in-house clinical trials) are sent to the Unit where they are collated, trends are looked at and it is reported to the Ethics committee.
  •     Therapeutic Drug Monitoring:

                Tacrolimus, Sirolimus and Everolimus test:  Monday, Wednesday and Friday. 

                MPA test:  Every day except Saturday and Sunday

                Lamotrigine: Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

                Levetiracetam: Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

                All other tests including Thiopurine methyl transferase activity, 6 Thioguanine, Mitotane, Vancomycin, Meropenem, Colistin,                 Paracetamol, Leflunomide, Anti TB drugs, Posaconazole, Clozapine, Theophylline and Acylcarnitine screening test: On NEED                 BASIS

2. Postgraduate courses

MD in Pharmacology – Every year 2 postgraduates are trained in the Department. They will be trained in vitro tissue experiments, therapeutic drug monitoring, pharmacovigilance, drug interaction audit, medical education, designing of clinical drug trials, drug screening, medicine use studies and pharmacoepidemiology.

3. Fellowship on Applied Pharmacokinetics:

This is a two-year course offered to candidates with an MD Pharmacology degree. (in the Town and Ranipet campus)
