  • The rehabilitation services of CMC were the first in India. See how they changed the future of one young man.

The Rehabilitation institute was started in 1966 as the first civilian residential medical rehabilitation facility in India. The founder Dr. Mary Varghese, an Alumnus of CMC , a paraplegic in her twenties developed this service for the disabled in India. Patients with brain and spine injuries resulting in disability are admitted in the Mary Varghese Institute of Rehabilitation for long term therapy and training.

The Institute is a WHO Collaborating Centre for Development of Rehabilitation Technology, Capacity Building and Disability Prevention, a tribute to the pioneering work done over the last 50 years.

Every year, the Rehab Institute organises a grand mela (fest) for all the ‘Rehab Graduates’ of CMC, living within 100 km of Vellore. It is time of reunion with old friends as well as free medical check ups for all. We need your support to keep it going!

Golden Jubilee floor, Golden Jubilee ward and other facilities were dedicated on 25th January 2019. With the new facility, the bed strength in Rehabilitation Institute has been increased to hundred with expansion of all therapy facilities. » The Library was expanded with contributions from the Mary Verghese fund through the Vellore CMC Foundation and was inaugurated by Dr. Honorine Ward, Chair, Vellore CMC Foundation and Dr. Anna Pulimood, Principal. The new floor and other renovations were undertaken as part of the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Rehabilitation Institute which was opened by Dr. Mary Verghese on the 26th November, 1966.
