Established in 1900 by Dr. Ida S. Scudder, Christian Medical College Vellore has evolved into a renowned centre for medical education, research, and compassionate healthcare delivery. The educational philosophy at CMC Vellore transcends traditional boundaries, emphasising holistic development and a steadfast commitment to social responsibility.
The institution offers a spectrum of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, ranging from medicine and nursing to allied health sciences. The curriculum is meticulously designed to foster critical thinking, ethical practice, and a comprehensive understanding of healthcare challenges. Students are not mere recipients of information; they are active participants in a dynamic learning process that encourages inquiry and innovation.
Medical Education:
In 1918, Dr. Ida Scudder initiated the LMP (Licentiate Medical Practitioner) programme, which was later upgraded to the MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) course in 1942. The CMC curriculum is a unique hybrid programme that combines subject/discipline-based, community-based, competency-based, and problem-based learning methodologies.
Nursing Education:
The nursing school was established in 1909 which evolved into a structured Diploma Nursing programme in 1932, after which the College started India’s first-degree course (1946), postgraduate courses (1969) and doctoral programmes (1994). The College follows a curriculum that is designed with a strong theoretical foundation, emphasis on clinical experience, providing value-based nursing education.
Allied Health Sciences:
CMC Vellore has been constantly upgrading the AHS courses from informal in-service training to certificate, diploma and university degree-level courses. The training integrates classroom teaching with hands-on clinical and practical work. The courses are designed to improve knowledge and professional skills, build character and nurture motivation.
Distance Education Unit:
The Distance Education Unit envisions an exponential increase in trained human resources for quality healthcare delivery, especially to the poor and marginalised in India and similar developing countries. The department strives to achieve this by training all categories of health workers (doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, medical/nursing students and community volunteer workers) through targeted curricula that provide standardised theoretical and practical training conducted at more than 20 centres nationwide.
