Staff and Student Health Service

Staff and Student Health Services (SSHS) 
The Staff and Student Health Services (SSHS) provide medical services to all the Staff and Students of Christian Medical College. SSHS is an important department as it caters to the needs of more than 10000 staff members and 1500 students. The SSHS provides immediate attention to healthcare needs of all staff and student. SSHS also takes appropriate measures to protect them from all infections, diseases and occupational hazards.
SSHS helps the institution to recruit medically fit individuals to work in the institution as they cater to the needs of sick people. SSHS also conducts periodical medical check ups to existing staff and ensure that they are in good health.
Outpatient Clinic: 
The outpatient clinic has a patient waiting area and doctor’s rooms. The staff or student will have to make an appointment to see the doctor. However emergency cases will be attended immediately.
* The OPD clinic functions on all working days as follows:
Monday to Friday – 8.00 AM to 4.00 PM
Saturday                 – 8.00 AM to 12.00 PM
* The SSHS duty doctor will be on call ( duty mobile 05121) 24 hours to attend staff and student emergencies and also to manage the needle stick injuries.
* On Sundays, the SSHS duty doctor will see the patients in Emergency Services Department.
Medical Records Section: 
The SSHS has a medical records section with medical records officers who take care of appointments and maintainence of staff records. 
Nursing Section: 
Nursing care is provided by the nursing section. The medicines, injections, vaccines and other equipment are maintained by the nursing staff. 
Observation Room: 
Patients who need observation and immediate treatment will be admitted and monitored in this room before they are shifted to inpatient wards.
Office: 
All official activities, departmental meetings and other managerial works will be carried out in the office.
Inpatient beds: 
The B ward has four beds out of which two beds are allotted for male staff and two beds are allotted for female staff. The O6 west ward has two semi-private rooms in which one semi private room is allotted for male staff and one semi private room is allotted for female staff. 
Vision: 
Staff and Student Health Services will provide the best healthcare service to all staff and student of CMC by adopting all preventive and curative measures. SSHS will address all the occupational health hazards and lay down policies and procedures to prevent the same.
Objectives: 
The main objectives of Staff and Student Health Services are:
To ensure that all staff and student are in good health as they work among the sick people coming to the hospital
To prevent staff and students from infection and diseases as they are exposed to the same
To provide good services to the staff and students coming to SSHS
To provide safe and pleasant environment for the staff
To provide appropriate and fast service to staff and students
To help recruit individuals who are medically fit to work in CMC
To address the occupational health needs and precautions for the staff and students
The SSHS is located in the first floor of Out Patient Department (OPD) block. SSHS has an Outpatient Clinic, Medical Records section, Nursing section, Observation room and an Office. The B ward and O6 west ward has inpatient beds for staff admitted under SSHS.

SSHS provides many services that are detailed below:
Pre-employment check up 
New candidates seeking employment in CMC will be screened for medical fitness once they are selected in the interview process. The candidate will report to SSHS MRO and a pre employment health chart will be issued to the candidate. The health chart will be filled by the candidate and if any information is found to be false, it will lead to termination of employment at any stage.
Physical examination will be done by SSHS doctor. The candidate has to undergo Eye check up in the ophthalmology department. Blood test will be done and X ray will taken. The results and reports will be checked by SSHS doctor and if the results are normal, clearance will be sent to the appointing authority.
Immunization
SSHS provide vaccination for hepatitis B, diphtheria, MMR, tetanus, chicken pox and others in case of requirement. All newly employed staff should be vaccinated for hepatitis B. This vaccine is given in three doses. If the candidate is already vaccinated, then the titer value is checked. If the titer is less than the standard value (10/ml), then they have to be newly vaccinated.
Outpatient consultation for Staff and Students during working hours
Anybody who has any illness may attend the SSHS OPD for advice. Treatment is given by the doctors available in the SSHS OPD. If the staff or student is sick, the doctor issues the sick leave slip based on the seriousness of the illness. 
Registering for appointment to see the doctor in SSHS: When a staff member is sick he/she and registers the hospital number with the MRD staff. At the appropriate time he/ she is seen by the doctor.
Emergency calls out of working hours
Staff and students who need emergency medical care will be seen by the SSHS duty doctor out of SSHS working hours also. The staff or student will be seen in the casualty by SSHS doctor on call and this is applicable only for emergencies. The patient will be diagnosed and treatment will be started immediately. If necessary, admission will be given in B ward or O6 ward that has SSHS beds. If the treatment requires specialist involvement then the person is referred to concerned department appropriately for further management.  
 
Admission of staff and students as In-patients
Staff who are unwell and requires hospital stay and are admitted through SSHS are admitted in the beds allotted for staff. Common admission slip is filled for the staff and send to the eligible ward for further treatment. Ward eligibility is given in staff service rules. Admission is done as per the availability of beds.
Annual Medical Checkup for staff
The annual medical check up is done every year for staff and students on rotation basis. Staff are invited by turn to come for these check up to the OPD clinic. Physical check up and investigations are done. After obtaining the results, staff are counseled or referred to the specialty units for further treatment.
Issuing of Fitness Certificates
SSHS issues fitness certificates for staff. After complete observation and verification of the candidate’s health the physician validates the candidate. The fitness certificate is given based on the standard policies. The fitness certificate is then forwarded to the concerned heads of the department with the authorization signature of the physician in SSHS who examined the candidate. If the candidate is found unfit, the details’ regarding illness etc are furnished at the back side of the form. 
Post-exposure prophylaxis for needle stick injuries
Immediate care is taken for staff and students who are exposed to needle stick injuries. Standard protocol is followed by which the victim is screened for blood borne viruses and then followed up.
Cardiac check > 45 years
The cardiac check procedure will be carried out for staff who are more than 45 years old. This is done taking into consideration the risk factors which leads to heart related problems. The investigations carried out include blood test, X ray and ECG. If any abnormalities are found, then the staff will be referred to cardiologist for further investigations and treatment.
Counselling for alcohol addiction
During working hours if staff is found to be under influence of alcohol, his supervisor will notify the same to the staff clinic. During SSHS out of working hour, the supervisor will notify the same to casualty. The blood is taken for blood alcohol on that person. The result of this is forwarded to the concerned authorities and necessary action is initiated if high alcohol levels are found. Rehabilitation is provided for such people through SSHS
Occupational health
During the annual medical check up staff at risk for hospital acquired infection such as TB are screened and if they are found to have acquired, the same is treated. At the time of check up staff is assessed clinically and by investigations to look for diseases like diabetes, high BP etc that need to be treated. Work related musculo skeletal disorders are referred to the Back school- a team comprising of staff from the PMR and OT with the SSHS doctors.
