INAUGURAL ADVANCED TRAUMA LIFE SUPPORT (ATLS) PROVIDER COURSE
The Department of Trauma Surgery concluded the Inaugural Advanced Trauma Life Support® (ATLS)® Provider Course, held from 31st August 2023 to 2nd September 2023, at Christian Medical College Vellore, marking a significant milestone in the field of trauma care and medical education. This prestigious course was organised under the expert guidance of Prof. M.C. Mishra, the former Director at AIIMS and the chair of ATLS, India.
ANNUAL CME PROGRAM
Inaugural annual CME program titled “Advances in Chest Trauma Management – ACTraM 2023” on October 13-14, 2023. This two-day event commenced with a symposium on chest trauma management on the 13th, hosted at the Ranipet Campus, followed by a hands-on cadaveric workshop in collaboration with the Department of Anatomy at the Anatomy Dissection Hall in CMC Bagayam Campus.
The CME program received its official inauguration from Dr. Vikram Mathews, the Director, who emphasized the significance of conducting more such trauma-related CMEs to underscore the importance of trauma services in our region. The Symposium witnessed the active participation of approximately 35 attendees in person, along with an additional 40 participants who joined the event online. The program featured distinguished faculty members from across India, including senior consultants from renowned institutions such as AIIMS, New Delhi, PGI Chandigarh, and AIIMS, Jodhpur. Notably, the symposium included a stimulating debate on the advantages, drawbacks, and current empirical evidence regarding surgical rib fixation. It also had a focus on imaging, non-operative management, latest surgical approaches and critical care management of chest trauma patients.
On the second day of the program, 11 eager participants engaged in a hands-on cadaveric workshop, where they gained practical knowledge about the fundamental approaches, instrumentation, and principles of surgical rib fixation.
TRAUMA FIRST RESPONDER PROGRAMMES
The Department of Trauma Surgery in association with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow (RCPSG) Hope Foundation conducted Trauma First Responder programmes for the community focusing on road safety, injury prevention, and basic first responder care for injured victims. Doctors from the department along with a team of trauma care nurses conducted its first outreach programme of the year at Arignar Anna Womens Arts and Science College, Walajapet on the 8th of February, 2024. More than 200 students and enthusiastic teachers attended the course and were introduced to the basic principles of road safety and on-site management of trauma victims.
The programme comprised a series of morning lectures on trauma and road safety with a hands-on afternoon session dedicated to the demonstration of the basic airway and stop-the-bleed manoeuvres for first responders.
The initiative is a part of the department and the institution’s outreach programme to improve awareness and education regarding trauma among the general public.
On 23rd February 2024 second Trauma First Responder programme at Auxilium College (Autonomous), Vellore – Dr. Krishnan Raghavendran, Professor, Division of Trauma and Acute Care, Surgery, University Hospital, Ann Arbor Hospital Michigan served as a guest faculty and Professor Sukria Nayak served as the course coordinator. More than 50 students and enthusiastic teachers attended the course and were introduced to the basic principles of road safety and on-site management of trauma victims.
INAUGURAL ADVANCED TRAUMA CARE FOR NURSES (ATCN)® COURSE ALONG WITH THE SECOND ADVANCED TRAUMA LIFE SUPPORT (ATLS)® COURSE
The Department of Trauma Surgery and the College of Nursing recently facilitated the institution’s Inaugural Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses® (ATCN)® Course along with the second Advanced Trauma Life Support® (ATLS)® Provider Course from the 11th –13th of April, 2024.
With the introduction of the ATCN® program at CMC Vellore, the department continues endeavouring to bring nurses to the forefront of trauma care, trauma education and injury prevention in the country.
The course structure promotes critical thinking, collaboration, and a team approach to trauma care. The training, designed to be highly interactive, is delivered by certified doctors and nurses. The practical training is carried out both on manikins (hands-on) and on simulated patients. This interactive approach ensures active participation and a deeper understanding of the material.
These initiatives, a testament to our institution’s commitment to excellence in education, represent a commendable effort towards enhancing trauma care capabilities and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
