Vascular Surgery

Vascular surgeons treat disorders of the arteries, veins and lymphatics.  Expertise for open and endovascular management is available in the department. In addition, we work with a multidisciplinary team comprising of Orthopedics, Urology, Rheumatology, Endocrinology, Physical medicine and rehabilitation, Diagnostic and interventional radiology, Cardiology and Neurology.
We emphasize early detection of vascular disease, and recommend minimally invasive procedures only when indicated.  Our non-invasive Vascular Laboratory performs testing for the detection of disease of the aorta and lower extremities- ABPI, Toe pressure, TCPO2, Compression therapy, Duplex ultrasound.
The department wishes to thank Dr’s GeofferyShead, Joe Devadatta ,Booshnam Moses and David Sadhu for their invaluable contribution to the field of vascular surgery in CMC,Vellore because of which we are one of the leading centre’s in the country.
Today the department is performing close to 800 vascular surgeries per year.  These include aortic aneurysm repair, aortobifemoral bypass, femoro-popliteal bypass, fem-distal bypass, subclavian artery transposition, carotid endarterectomy, carotid body tumor excision, varicose vein surgery, radio frequency ablation, endovenous laser and foam sclerotherapy for varicose veins etc. Peripheral endovascular intervention is also performed by us.

The Department of Vascular surgery at the Christian Medical College, Vellore provides comprehensive care for all vascular disorders, including;
  • Peripheral artery disease (PAD) and critical limb ischemia
  • Acute limb ischemia
  • Thoracic outlet syndrome
  • Abdominal and thoraco abdominal aortic aneurysms
  • Aortic dissection
  • Carotid, vertebral and aortic arch (great) vessel disease
  • Mesenteric ischemia
  • Renal access [ fistula ] surgery
  • Endovascular procedures – arterial and venous.
  • Deep vein thrombosis and acute venous disorders
  • Varicose veins, venous ulcers- laser/ radio frequency ablation, open surgery
  • Vascular infections and complications
  • Vascular malformations
  • Lymphedema
  • Vascular trauma

Our non-invasive Vascular Laboratory performs testing for the detection of disease of the aorta and lower extremities:

  • ABPI
  • Toe pressure
  • TCPO2
  • Compression therapy
  • Duplex ultrasound

CMC recognizes the need to train surgeons to manage an ever increasing burden of vascular disease in the country and runs a three year Vascular Surgery Mch Training programme and a one year Vascular Fellowship.
Advancement in the understanding of the differences in vascular disease and treatment seen in our population through ethical translational research in genetics, stem cell therapy and other areas of vascular medicine is ongoing.
Our mission is to offer patients access to the most advanced treatment for vascular disease available worldwide at an affordable cost.
Under graduate training
The department focuses on training undergraduates in basics of vascular surgery via lectures , bed-side clinics and hands on suturing workshops in conjunction with the principal’s office.
Post-graduate training
General surgery post-graduates are posted in the department on rotation and go through a structured hands –on training with exposure to the entire gamut of open and endovascular procedures both arterial and venous.
One year vascular fellowship –  1 seat
Vascular surgery is a budding sub-specialty / specialty in India which is rapidly expanding.  There is a growing need to train general surgeons in the principles and practice of vascular surgery, to meet the growing demand of the Indian population with vascular diseases.
This course which is for a period of one year gives the surgeon excellent exposure and “hands on” experience in management of acute and chronic arterial and venous diseases.  The candidate will spend one month learning skills in duplex ultrasound and endovascular intervention.  During the course the candidate would be guided towards publishing an article in an indexed journal.  There is an exit exam which is conducted at CMC with two external examiners and a certificate is awarded.
MCh vascular surgery – 1 seat, 3 year programme
The department is one of the few centre’s in the country that offer this course, recognised by the Tamil Nadu M.G.R university and the MCI. The candidate besides being exposed to sound, evidence based vascular medicine and surgery, is also encouraged to take part in research and make presentations in national and international conferences.
